GAC was established in 1991. It is approved by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the Peoples Republic of China as a socially organized trade association for the nation.

The headquarter of GAC is located in the capital of China, Beijing. GAC has the mission to promote the enterprises, to regulate the trading environment and to develop the industry of gems and jewelry. The objective of GAC is also to unite every individual who has been engaging in the gems and jewelry industry together to cultivate a healthy and steady trading environment, which has already been witnessed.

In 2008 the total consumption of Chinese jewelry industry in the jewelry section reached over 25 billion USD and export exceeded 9 billion USD. The labor in the industry surpassed 3 million and the registered jewelry companies of over 50,000. China ranks top in the consumptions of platinum, gold, diamond, jade, jadeite and rock crystal jewelry products.
